Why Do Karate? What Are The Benefits of Karate

Why do Karate?

For those that practice true karate-do or the ‘way of the empty hand’, karate is much more than a Japanese fighting art, it is a way of life!

There are more than 40 million exponents worldwide practicing this martial art and for good reason. While it an incredibly effective method of self-defence, karate is really a journey towards complete harmony of body, mind, and spirit with numerous holistic benefits.

So what are the benefits of karate?

Self-defence is a key benefit of karate, and particularly in a society where bulling, intimidation and in some cases violent crimes is rife, it’s never too early (or too late) to learn to protect oneself. That said, the benefits of karate are far more wide-reaching and if taught and trained correctly, encompass the following:

  •     Physical– karate trains one to become faster, stronger, more agile, and more flexible.
  •     Mental– it enhances cognitive abilities, improving focus, concentration, processing speed and reaction time.
  •     Spiritual– the value system and training methods inherent in karate-do develop character, teach self-control, and advance one’s existence to a space of calm and elevated awareness.
  •     Life-skills– karate teaches discipline, determination, and confidence, instilling a strong sense of self-belief while retaining humility.

Bear in mind these benefits apply to all that do karate and it’s never too late to start! It is also a great bonding experience to practice this art with your kids.

Good luck on your karate journey!

What Do Classes Cost?

The first 2 classes are free, this to ensure karate is what you are looking to do and gives you a chance to test the training and the dojo without any cost to you.  After the first two classes, there is a yearly registration fee (this covers registration to our Japanese Group KWF “Japan” and covers the student to Student insurance.

Monthly fees:

£40 per month – 1 student

£60 per month – 2 students (from same family)

£80 per month – 3 students (from same family)

£100 per month – 4 or more students (from same family)

What Do I Need To Wear?

Initially at least for the first few classes, you can wear anything which will allow you comfort in movement , like a tracksuit or training shorts. once you register you will receive a free karate suit which you will wear from then onwards.

Are There Any ‘Beginners’ Classes?

Only for the first few sessions, where individual training is provided to ensure proper understanding of basic techniques..

We then find that it’s easier for beginners to understand what classes are all about if they can see other more experienced students training alongside them. Also, our students are all very friendly & helpful (everybody says so after their 1st class), so there’s no need to be nervous.  It is nice to be around other beginners as well, so we are happy to suggest sessions with other new starters in them. Alternatively why not bring a friend for moral support!

As a beginner or a seasoned student, we recommend you train at least a couple of hours a week, to ensure your progress within the dojo, to maintain your flexibility and to retain the knowledge you have learned (i.e. KATA).

Everyone’s level of co-ordination is different. If that was a factor in irritating other students, there would be no Karate clubs around.😁

Actually we find that other students tend to help anyone that seems to be struggling.

KARATE – means “Empty hand” – NO we do not use sticks in any Karate training , the only stick used is by the Instructor to demonstrate the correct distribution of body weight in the various stances.

Belt gradings are held at the club every 6 months (sometimes we create special gradings for anyone that misses due to illness or other commitments)

Brown belt gradings are held twice a year, but at area Level.

Black belt gradings are usually held once or twice a year depending on requirements and are held at International level. The grade is then recognised and registered in Japan at the KWF Head Office.

Grading cost £25 (2024 rates) but senior gradings ( i.e Black Belts) fees are dictated by Japan KWF.

Client Testimonials

Such a warm and welcoming group and the teaching is second to none! Both Sensei Marco and all the sub instructors are amazing at what they do and are always eager to share their endless knowledge of karate! I really look forward to classes every week and always leave feeling great and as if I’ve achieved something!

James Gregory

I’ve been doing KWF training with Sensei Marco since I was 5 1/2 years old. Sensei Marco had made me achieve my inner strength and confidence. I really enjoy training and competitions, it can be nerve wracking but it’s the whole experience. My aim is to teach alongside Marco and give others the opportunity to train and achieve to the best in myself and other students. Karate helps you in so many ways, strength, confidence, self defence, relax and self tune, we have a really nice karate family. Thank you Marco and KWF

Mia Lewis

I’ve been doing karate for 8 years the last 5 being with Sensei Marco who trained with my Uncle in South Africa so it was wonderful to come and train with him full time. Karate has really helped me with my Tics as it allows me to develop confidence, concentration and focus. I am now brave enough to enter competitions and we have recently returned from a Seminar In Poland with Grand Master Yahara so I am now braver than I ever thought possible.
